NPP backs one nation, one election idea

Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP national president, Conrad K Sangma has endorsed the one nation, one election agenda pitched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The idea of one nation, one election is good for the nation as it saves expenditure and improves the overall efficiency of the elections, said Conrad after the all-party meeting held in New Delhi today.

Of course, there will be challenges to it and therefore, consultation must be done with all the stakeholders to ensure that the ideas are taken in and based on that, proper decisions can be made, said Conrad.

Conrad informed that other than the one nation, one election agenda, the parties also discussed agendas regarding the 75th year celebration of India s Independence and 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi; the political parties also discussed on the agenda pertaining to the aspirational districts and how to improve them.

Conrad informed that during the meeting, he dwelled on improving the productivity of the parliament and said that parliament productivity can be in two terms Time and MP s productivity.

Time productivity is important to ensure that the parties realise and inculcate the practice of participating in the debates rather than creating noise or judging the MP s productivity by the noise he makes; a person s productivity should be weighed according to his participation in the parliament. So that culture has to come in, Conrad said.

On this note, Conrad has asked parliamentarians to learn from Meghalaya in as far as improving the productivity of the proceedings is concerned.

Stating that Meghalaya is an example of productive proceedings , Conrad said In the Meghalaya Assembly, the proceedings normally goes off in a very healthy manner. Yes, we have arguments but they were productive arguments but we don t stall the proceedings of the house. From that angle, Meghalaya can show an example, in one way, to the MPs and the Parliament.

In as far MP s productivity is concerned, the NPP president said, MPs can be more productive if they are given manpower, offices and I think each MP should be given an office and enough staff so that research and work can be done in that line.

He also informed that PM Modi also reflected the same idea saying that today s meeting was just the beginning with an intention to open the subject after which discussions and consultations will take place at every level and once these are done, then only decision will be made on how this can be taken forward.

The PM said this is not his agenda nor his government s but the agenda for the nation so it should be taken forward in a positive manner, added the Meghalaya Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, today announced a Committee to study the issue of One Country, One Election threadbare.

Later, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told media persons after the all-party meet that they had invited 40 political parties, out of which presidents of 21 parties participated and 3 other parties sent their opinion on the subjects in writing.
